It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved employee, Darrel Taylor, on Tuesday, March 12, 2024. Surrounded by his loved ones, Darrel bid farewell after spending several decades dedicated to McCallum Testing Laboratories. His journey with us began as a shop mechanic, and through his hard work and dedication, he rose to the role of drilling supervisor. McCallum Testing Laboratories is actively seeking a Field Technician for employment. Our field technicians are full-time inspectors that perform field inspections of construction improvements for compliance with plans, standards, specifications, city codes, and ordinances. Duties include testing construction materials such as concrete, soil, and asphalt for quality at various construction sites and preparation of daily reports. Technicians work independently but also function as part of a team, requiring good communication skills.
Seeking Concrete Technician
McCallum Testing Laboratories is actively seeking a Concrete Technician for employment. Our concrete technician is a full-time technician that works in the laboratory performing tests on various materials, mainly concrete, and preparations for those tests in accordance with standards and job specifications. Duties include testing construction materials such as concrete, soil, and asphalt in the laboratory and preparation of daily reports. Technicians work independently but also function as part of a team, requiring good communication skills.
Seeking Driller and Driller’s Helper
McCallum Testing Laboratories is actively seeking a Driller and Driller’s Helper for employment. Our drillers operate or assist in operating our drilling rigs that are used to collect soil and water samples and to install monitoring wells. Duties include lifting heavy augers and bags of material up to eighty pounds, operating a drilling rig, counting hammer blows, collecting soil samples and correctly labeling sample containers, and avoiding accidents.

Virginia Beach Town Center
Virginia Beach, Virginia – 2000-2015
McCallum has provided services for the construction of Virginia Beach Town Center from the Armada Hoffler Tower (2000), as well as multiple additional buildings and infrastructure through to the present. Services included subsurface exploration and geotechnical engineering, detailed pile recommendations, dynamic pile testing and evaluation of pile foundation systems, structural fill and compaction testing, dynamic compaction recommendations and vibration monitoring, and construction materials and laboratory testing.
Town Center is a mixed-use urban development with offices, residential apartments, restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues.
Naval Air Station Oceana
Virginia Beach, Virginia – 1992-2014
McCallum has provided runway structural fill and compaction testing, and construction materials and laboratory testing periodically, as needed, for a number of years. This photo shows McCallum monitoring a concrete pour. McCallum has also provided subsurface exploration for the installation of runway lighting systems.
Naval Air Station Oceana (NAS Oceana) was commissioned in 1943 by the United States Navy as an auxiliary field, and it has grown to be a Master Jet Base and one of the principal military air facilities on the east coast.

Newport News, Virginia – 2009-2012
McCallum performed work for multiple structures at CNU over the years (McMurran Hall, Science Building, Rappahannock Hall, Student Center, etc.). Services include geotechnical exploration and engineering, dynamic compaction recommendations and vibration monitoring, environmental testing, structural fill, and compaction testing, construction materials and laboratory testing, and field review and monitoring of utility installation.

Norfolk, Virginia – 2008-2011
McCallum performed structural fill and compaction testing, construction materials, and laboratory testing, field review and monitoring of utility installation, and structural steel inspection for various stations, the bridge (viaduct) between Harbor Park and Norfolk State University stations, and the vehicle storage and maintenance facility. McCallum also provided subsurface exploration for the signal pole foundations.
The Tide is over seven miles long, stretching from the Eastern Virginia Medical Center at its westernmost end through downtown Norfolk and ending at Newtown Road. It includes eleven stations, and the light rail vehicles are powered by an overhead electrical system.
Newport News, Virginia – 2003-2004
McCallum performed work for multiple structures in City Center (Paragon, office and retail buildings, etc.). Services included subsurface exploration and geotechnical engineering, detailed pile recommendations, dynamic pile testing and evaluation of pile foundation system, structural fill and compaction testing, construction materials and laboratory testing, field review and monitoring of utilities installation.
The Marriott at City Center is an eleven-story, full-service hotel and conference facility with 256 guestrooms, meeting areas, and a rotunda with a view of the five-acre fountain.
